"I have a dream that one day
this nation will rise up and
live out the true meaning of its creed:
'We hold these truths to be self-evident:
that all men are created equal.'"
It's as if Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. personally led us to this historical day where the United States welcomes it's first African American president. On the day after the national holiday saluting Dr. King and his incredible dream and sacrifice, we stand on the edge of a new day. It's not so much about the man, Barack Obama, it's about what it took for this day to come and what it says about us.
I marvel at the shift in our people's collective consciousness that brought us to this day. To me it represents huge evolution. Today I imagine Malia and Sasha Obama playing on the floor under the desk in the Oval Office as John John and Caroline Kennedy did. Imagine the change in how Black Americans are perceived since those Civil Rights Movement days. I get chills when I think that there are senior citizens today who experienced "Colored Only" lines, seats, drinking fountains, billy clubs and fire hoses, and thinking.
As a Jewish woman, I know how generational wounds and scars resulting from mistreatment and prejudice can travel down blood lines. I can only imagine what it's like for Blacks to continue to be treated differently by so many even given all that has improved.
The day after the election Will Smith shared with Oprah the impact of having an African American president; the pride, the role model for children of color. That same day someone shared that when Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation he believed to have said that when one people is raised up, so are all people. We are all impacted today.
That is why today is a day of inspiration to me.
Today is a day of hope.
No matter how you voted in the Presidential Election, take note of the change in the minds and hearts of a people that can go from the emancipation of slaves in 1865, to the Civil Rights Movement one hundred years later, and to this day just over 40 years after that.
I have a dream. I dream that "one day" IS TODAY. I dream that we will all join together to support this wave of evolution and this unifying consciousness. Join me in answering the call to stay awake and present... to answer the call and needs of our country in some way. Let's do it together; across aisles, across colors and cultures, across neighborhoods, lifestyles and incomes.
What will you think or do differently to be a part of the dream?
